Du bist so groß wie... Ein Größenvergleich deines Babys mit Obst und Gemüse

From Poppy Seed to Watermelon – Your Baby's Size Comparison!

Pregnant! As soon as the test is positive, an incredible journey begins – 40 weeks of pregnancy, week by week, your little miracle grows. But how big is your baby really in each week of pregnancy? To help you visualize it better, here's the ultimate comparison: fruits and vegetables! From a tiny poppy seed to a plump watermelon – with each week of pregnancy and each trimester, your baby takes up more space and will leave you in awe.

But beware: no baby adheres to an exact size plan! Some grow a little faster, others take their time – and that's completely normal. This comparison is an entertaining guide, but not a medical rule of thumb or guideline. If you are unsure or have questions, please ask your doctor. Now, have fun marveling at the little fruits your baby goes through on its growth journey, week by week of pregnancy! Let's get started!

Week 4

At the very beginning - you are as tiny as a poppy seed

An ultrasound image would not show anything yet, but major changes are underway. At the end of week 4, hope finally turns into certainty.

Week 5

You are as tiny as a sesame seed

Now, a dark spot, which is the gestational sac, can be seen on ultrasound images. Your baby will grow inside it until birth.

Week 06

You are as small as a grain of rice

From now on, a tiny second heart beats in your womb.

Week 7

You're the size of a blueberry

Currently, your baby is growing about one millimeter every day. The nerve cells, face, and first organs are developing. The head is now growing particularly fast.

Week 8

You're as big as a raspberry

Tiny fingers and toes are already growing on the hands and feet. For now, they are still webbed, as there is still plenty of space for gymnastics and swimming exercises.

Week 9

You're the size of a grape

Your baby's face is now developing its first features and it is already reacting to sounds and light.

Week 10

You are as big as a strawberry

By the end of week 10, your baby has completed embryonic development. From now on, it is referred to as a fetus.

Week 11

You're as big as a fig

Your baby's fingernails and toenails are starting to grow. Their head now makes up about half of their body length.

Week 12

You are as big as a lime

Your baby is becoming really active now. They can suck their thumb, yawn, or even frown.

Week 13

You're now the size of a kiwi

Your baby is kicking their arms and legs vigorously. This week, the right and left hemispheres of the brain connect with each other.

Week 14

You're the size of a peach

Your baby opens and closes its mouth like a little fish. It's practicing breathing and soon, feeding.

Week 17

You're as big as an orange

Your baby can now perceive sounds, such as your voice, the gurgling of your stomach, or your heartbeat.

Week 18

Your baby is breathing amniotic fluid in and out to train its lungs. The first delicate lines of individual fingerprints are forming on the fingertips.

Week 19

You're the size of a grapefruit

Your baby's reproductive organs are now almost fully developed. The skin is now forming its different layers.

Week 20

The neural pathways are increasingly interconnected, and motor coordination is continuously improving. The five senses of sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch are developing rapidly.

Week 21

Your baby is now developing their own sleep-wake rhythm. Their face is already showing very personal, individual features.

Week 22

The umbilical cord reliably supplies your baby with nutrients, and it also makes a wonderful toy.

Week 23

You're as tall as a corn cob

Your baby's hearing continues to develop. They can distinguish different voices, perceive a ringing phone, or notice siblings playing.

Week 24

You are as tall as an eggplant

Your baby is now in its most physically active developmental phase, and your womb is like a gymnasium.

Week 25

You're the size of a papaya now

Now, the first foundations for the milk teeth are forming in the palate. Your baby is diligently drinking amniotic fluid to practice the swallowing reflex.

Week 26

You're as long as a zucchini

Your baby's spine is growing stronger. And the little one can already keep their eyes open, blink, and distinguish between light and dark.

Week 27

You're as tall as a broccoli.

Your baby is now actively practicing swallowing amniotic fluid. This is why it gets hiccups more and more often.

Week 28

Your baby's organs and nerves are now largely developed. From now on, your baby will also start to form body fat and continue to grow, of course.

Space in the womb is slowly but surely getting tighter. The downy lanugo hair on the body falls out, and now the hair on the head multiplies.

Between weeks 33 and 34, the amniotic fluid reaches its peak. After that, the amount slowly decreases again until birth.

34th week

You're now the size of a cantaloupe

Your baby is now slowly starting to strengthen and build their immune system against simple infections.

Week 35

You're the size of a honeydew melon

The small body is now fully developed down to the smallest detail. The central nervous system, digestive system, and lungs are almost completely mature.

Week 36

You're as big as a cabbage.

Your baby is now building up a sufficiently thick layer of fat to better maintain its body temperature after birth.

Week 37

You're as tall as a stalk of chard

Lately, your baby has been gaining about 250g per week. This will now decrease significantly. Your baby's immune system continues to develop.

Week 38

You're as tall as a rhubarb stalk now.

Your baby is no longer gaining much in size, but mostly only in weight. All body systems are working together in a coordinated manner.

39th Week

You're now the size of a small watermelon

All organs are functioning; only the lungs continue to develop until birth.

Week 40

You're as big as a pumpkin

Now your baby is really well prepared, its development is complete, and it basically just "needs" to be born now.
